International Women & Girls in STEM Day: Empowering the Future of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
February 11th is designated as the International Women & Girls in STEM Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It is a day to acknowledge the challenges that women and girls face in these male-dominated fields and to encourage more young girls to pursue careers in STEM.
In 2018, the amount of women studying STEM subjects was 35% compared to a whopping 65% of men in those classes. One of the primary reasons for this disparity is a lack of female role models and mentors in STEM.
Young girls need to see women who have succeeded in these fields to believe that they too can pursue a career in STEM. This is why events like International Women & Girls in STEM Day are so important. They provide opportunities for young girls to meet and interact with successful women in STEM and to learn about the exciting and impactful work they are doing.
Below, we've included our previous roundtables and podcast episodes on what it is to be a women in STEM, inspiring women in the tech industry and how diversity can be balanced.
